Are you kidding me?
This story about the big abortion parade contains two quotes which boggle the mind. First, check out this nutcase:
Carole Mehlman, 68, came from Tampa, Fla., to support a cause that has motivated her to march for 30 years, as long as abortion has been legal.
"I just had to be here to fight for the next generation and the generation after that," she said. "We cannot let them take over our bodies, our health care, our lives."
She's "fighting for the next generation"? What?!?
Then there's this one:
Police used barricades and a heavy presence at that site to keep it from becoming a flashpoint. Both sides yelled at each other as the vanguard of the march reached the counter-demonstration.
"Look at the pictures, look at the pictures," shouted abortion opponents, holding up big posters showing a fetus at eight weeks.
"Lies, lies," marchers shouted back.
I guess if you support something enough, you can even convince yourself that a picture of a baby is a "lie" while your agenda is the truth. How sad.

Remember Bill Clinton?
I always thought this article on Clinton and the TV show "Temptation Island" was pretty good. A taste:
I believe that this program is the perfect showcase for Clinton and his lack of morals. However, I'm not sure if the 26 singles, thirteen of whom I presume are female, will satisfy our lustful President for the entire two weeks. That isn't even one woman a day. We all know Clinton can handle much more than that. That is why I think the show's producers will, if they are smart, make Clinton the "Mr. Roarke" of Temptation Island. Remember that old Ricardo Montalban character from Fantasy Island-wouldn't Clinton be perfect for it?
Clinton can run the island, and be in charge of "initiating" all the interns - I mean guests - to the show and the island. And Al Gore can be Tattoo, his trusty sidekick. (Boss! de shame! de shame!) He already has all the ugly earth-tone suits he would need. Gore can also be in charge of the island's "Save the Dolphins" program, and organize the rescue efforts for the "Beached Whale episode" (No, I'm not referring to when Hillary! visits.) This would be perfect for sweeps week. Maybe Monica Lewinsky could even flash her thong in a guest appearance. Wouldn't it be fun? It really wouldn't be all that different from the past eight years, in which we have seen Clinton grope his way from one woman to the next, and at least we would be spared the spectacle of his lying about it.

Sticking it to the People
Two years ago, the people of California voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill prohibiting same-sex marriage. Since that time, legislation giving all of the rights of marriage to same-sex couples was passed, and now the legislature is considering a bill that actually will make same-sex marriage legal in the state, as is reported here. I guess government "of the people, by the people and for the people" doesn't apply in California.

Rape Used to be a Capital Offense
Here is another sad commentary on the state of affairs in today's world. Rape used to be a capital crime--that means people were punished by death for committing such a heinous crime. It truly is disheartening that the military's (and society's) reaction to these types of of crimes has become somewhat muted.

Information or entertainment?
Just came across the following, which was spoken by George Gallup (one of our pioneer pollsters) at a speech at the University of Iowa in 1953:
One of the real threats to America's future place in the world is a citizenry which daily elects to be entertained and not informed. From the time the typical citizen arises and looks at his morning newspaper until he turns off his radio or television set before going to bed, he has unwittingly cast his vote a hundred times for entertainment or for education. Without his knowing it, he has helped determine the very character of our three most important media of communication -- the press, radio, and television.
The sad and irrefutable fact is that the choice of the American public is going so heavily in favor of entertainment that we may, as the saying goes, eventually "kill ourselves laughing."

Does this come as any real surprise? I have asked this rhetorical question many times to many people--what would happen if everyone confined their sexual activity to marriage? Can you imagine the impact such self restraint might have on the world?

Steyn Rocks
As usual, Mark Steyn nails it. This time, he takes down Richard Clarke, the terrorism "expert" (and yes, I use that term loosely). A taste:
Having served both the 42nd and 43rd Presidents, Clarke was supposed to be the most authoritative proponent to advance the Democrats' agreed timeline of the last decade - to whit, from January 1993 to January 2001, Bill Clinton focused like a laser on crafting a brilliant plan to destroy al-Qa'eda, but, alas, just as he had dotted every "i", crossed every "t" and sent the intern to the photocopier, his eight years was up, so Bill gave it to the new guy as he was showing him the Oval Office - "That carpet under the desk could use replacing. Oh, and here's my brilliant plan to destroy al-Qa'eda, which you guys really need to implement right away."
The details of the brilliant plan need not concern us, which is just as well, as there aren't any. But the broader point, as The New York Times noted, is that "there was at least no question about the Clinton administration's commitment to combat terrorism".
Yessir, for eight years the Clinton administration was relentless in its commitment: no sooner did al-Qa'eda bomb the World Trade Center first time round, or blow up an American embassy, or a barracks, or a warship, or turn an entire nation into a terrorist training camp, than the Clinton team would redouble their determination to sit down and talk through the options for a couple more years. Then Bush took over and suddenly the superbly successful fight against terror all went to hell.
Right.

"Abortion is the binding pledge of the Spin Sisters sorority."
The title is from an article about a new book, "Spin Sisters: How the women of the media sell unhappiness and liberalism to the women of America," written by former Ladies' Home Journal editor Myrna Blyth.
The article quotes the book, and notes:
"Abortion is the binding pledge of the Spin Sisters sorority. It's an issue where there can never be any equivocation or discussion, pro-choice is the only choice." Yet Blyth points out that an ABC News/Washington Post poll done in January 2003 found 57 percent of American women are opposed to abortion as a means to end an unwanted pregnancy. So where's the balance?
Good question.

Who's Kerry gonna pick?
This article in the NY Times notes that:
"Mr. Johnson [Kerry's guy in charge of interviewing the deadbeats] has had conversations with at least four contenders for the nomination, Democratic officials said. They are Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Gov. Thomas J. Vilsack of Iowa."
I have commented previously on Kerry's choice, and my top two picks were apparently visited by Kerry's guy. I noted:
"I gotta think Kerry picks someone more conservative, at least in appearance. Maybe Dick Gephardt, Bill Richardson or Leon Panetta (although these last two are probably not big enough names). Maybe he'll pick Warren Beatty."
Don't you think that if Hillary Clinton doesn't want it, it's gotta be Gephardt?
"Inappropriate judicial adherence to foreign laws or legal tribunals" to be examined...
Just came across this item (click on No. 18), from a speech the House Judiciary Committee Chairman delivered on March 23rd to the Judicial Conference. It concludes with the following paragraph:
Before I conclude, I wish to touch briefly on a point that has generated significant scholarly debate and renewed urgency in light of recent Supreme Court decisions: the Court's increased reliance on foreign laws or judicial proceedings in the interpretation of American constitutional and statutory law. Article VI of the Constitution unambiguously states that the Constitution and federal statutes are the supreme law of the land. America's sovereignty may be imperiled by a jurisprudence predicated upon laws and judicial decisions unfound in our Constitution and unincorporated by the Congress. Inappropriate judicial adherence to foreign laws or legal tribunals threatens American sovereignty, unsettles the separation of powers carefully crafted by our Founders, and threatens to undermine the legitimacy of the American judicial process. I anticipate Congressional examination of this issue in the coming months.

Aren't ALL students already protected?
Check out this story:
A school district in conservative Orange County is risking the loss of millions in state aid for refusing to update its anti-discrimination policy to protect transgender students.
Westminster school board trustee Judy Ahrens said the state Education Department policy promotes homosexuality, and she will not give in to what she called blackmail. "I'm calling their bluff," she said.
Ms. Ahrens stance has some people angry:
Some parents have started gathering signatures in a recall campaign against the three members blocking the policy change.
"People are shocked," said Lisa Mathews, who has two children in a Westminster elementary school. "It's like they seem to feel that they are above the law, like their position on the school board affords them immunity from state laws."
What law is she breaking? In any event, I thought elected officials in California didn't have to follow the law. At least that's what everyone said when the Mayor of San Francisco announced his unilateral decision to impose same-sex marriage on the state, despite specific legislation prohibiting it.
Heading Out
Well, I leave today for Utah. I start my new job on Monday. I can't wait to get settled and have life return to some sense of normalcy. Hopefully, I will return to regular blogging soon.
