Unborn Recognized as Persons
Click here for some encouraging news.
The legislation defines an "unborn child" as a child in utero, which it says "means a member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb."
For an interesting discussion on whether the unborn are persons, and who gets to make the call, click here and here, and read the comments. What do you think?

Loony Professor (I know, that's redundant)
Some idiot profesor at Claremont College in California vandalized her own car, causing a huge uproar, with all the usual rallies, speeches against racism, etc., blah, blah, blah.... (Another excellent essay on the controversy can be found here.)
This kind of stuff drives me nuts. Ever notice how logic and liberals are never in close proximity?
Professor Harry V. Jaffa (one of my favorite guys, and an awesome scholar) notes the contrast in the response to the alleged "hate crime," and another one perpetrated against him. Not surprising.

When Choice Becomes Tyranny
Ms. Morality points out a wonderful op-ed by Jonathan Turley. Professor Turley begins:
There was a time when the abortion debate focused on the right of a woman to choose whether to end her pregnancy without the threat of criminal penalties or government harassment. How far this debate has moved from there was evident in a courthouse in Salt Lake City last week.
He ends:
The decision of NOW and other groups to defend Rowland is only the latest evidence of how far these organizations have moved to the extreme. This month, NOW, the ACLU and Planned Parenthood opposed a parental notice law in Florida as a threat to the right to abortion — even though most pro-choice voters support parental notice. Lynn Paltrow, executive director of the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, has declared the charges against Rowland an "assault on motherhood." But the case is no more an assault on motherhood than an embezzlement case is an assault against capitalism.
Even referring to "the twins" or the "babies" has drawn the ire of these groups. Indeed, Paltrow has vehemently objected to any effort "to personify the fetus."
Rowland deserves a trial and a chance to prove that the allegations against her are false. This includes a possible defense of insanity, which has been alluded to by these groups.
But let's be clear: What Rowland is accused of doing is not "bad timing," as stated by NOW's Gandy. If proven, it is an act of unspeakable indifference to the lives of two babies. NOW's Pavlovian response to this case has nothing to do with choice. It is about choice without consequences; a notion of absolute autonomy that borders on individual tyranny.
Amen. I have written previously on Lynn Paltrow's group. Suffice it to say she's a nutjob.

Homosexuality, the new Religion
Apparently, since 1972, the United Methodist Church has included a passage in its Book of Discipline stating that homosexuality is "incompatible with Christian teaching." Despite this, and despite the fact that one of its ordained ministers admitted the fact that she was engaged in a lesbian relationship, a jury of 13 ministers found that this did not violate church law.
This New York Times article contains the following passages:
The prosecution had argued that the case for conviction was cut and dried, because since 1972, the law of the Methodist church, the Book of Discipline, has included a passage that says homosexuality is "incompatible with Christian teaching." The prosecution called only one witness.
But Ms. Dammann's defense team presented more than 20 witnesses, including several eminent Methodist legal scholars and experts in Scripture, who argued that the Book of Discipline and the Bible contain unclear and contradictory passages about homosexual relationships.
The Rev. Karla M. Fredericksen, speaking for her fellow jurors, said they were not convinced that the Book of Discipline barred homosexuals from serving as ministers.
"Although we, the trial court, found passages that contain the phrasing `incompatible with Christian teaching,' we did not find that any of them constitute a declaration," Ms. Fredericksen said.
This is liberal logic at its best. What can you say -- they don't even have to point to the Bible, their own "Book of Discipline" clearly condemns the practice. Yet, they can argue with a straight face that this woman has done nothing wrong. Unbelievable.
The Rev. Dr. Maxie D. Dunnam, president of Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., said: "How can there be a not guilty verdict when what she's done is public and she has confessed it? I'm very surprised and I'm very disappointed because it's another sign of really anarchy in the church."
Dr. Dunnam said the issue could create a schism in the church. "We can't continue to live with a whole segment of the church that is deliberately disobeying the church's law," he said.
This guy obviously doesn't get it -- the new religion is homosexuality, and he's the one who will be brought before the next jury. Only this time they'll convict -- he'll be guilty of prejudice against homosexuals.

Lack of Posting
To our faithful readers (read grandparents, parents, siblings, etc.), I want to explain the nearly nonexistent posting of late.
Last Thursday, I received an offer for employment with a law firm in Salt Lake City, Utah, which offer I have decided to accept. Since then, life has been a whirlwind. My start date is April 5, and we have a lot to do before leaving Ohio. I also have had a ton of work to finish up at my present job.
I may post something this weekend, but over the next 3-5 weeks any posting I do will be very light. I know Mark has been pretty swamped as well (although he might just be slacking), but we will get things going again soon. Thanks for your patience and support, and keep coming back. (We also wouldn't mind you all telling your friends about our site.)

Defenders of the Faith
That is the title and subject of an excellent talk by Sheri L. Dew given at a recent gathering in Washington D.C. to discuss the state of the family.
Notwithstanding the fact that he stole Mark's intro, Orson Scott Card's editorial on same-sex marriage and civilization is a must read.
And if there is any doubt that the most pressing and controversial issue of our time is same-sex marriage, just look at these headlines:
Same-sex marriage ban fails in Michigan
Annan directive on gay unions triggers ire of U.N. members
Scandinavian marriage scorned as model for U.S.
Cheney Stars in Gay Republicans' Anti-Bush Ad
A Marriage Made in History? (If you only read one or two of these articles, read this one as it discusses the liberal case AGAINST same-sex marriage.)
Marriage's changing face
Planned Parenthood Hires a Chaplain
They need some religious help, but I don't know if this guy fits the bill. His job is "to articulate the spiritual dimensions of sexuality and reproduction"?
I didn't know that abortion had a spiritual side. Silly me.
It's time for an intervention
Our society is sick. We, as a society, are fixated and addicted to sex. What else explains what would possess some people to play pornographic films while they are driving their vehicles around. We need to wake up and realize the extent to which our society, or some portions of it, have fallen into moral decay. We have got to start enforcing public decency laws and laws prohibiting obscenity and the pandering of such obscenity. Enough is enough!

Identifying Anarchy
Ms. Morality has prepared an updated chart showing where state and local leaders have thumbed their noses at State and Federal laws regarding marriage. It is interesting to note the spread of anarchy across our land. The movement continues to snowball, making a Federal Marriage Amendment necessary.

What a bunch of jokers
The Los Angeles Times -- what a joke. Reuters has picked up a story I commented on recently. It discusses how some flunkie at the Times changed the phrase "pro-life" to "anti-abortion" and the fallout. It's pretty darn funny.

BIG TEN CHAMPS, BABY!!!
Congratulations to the Fighting Illini, who beat Ohio State 64-63 to secure their fourth Big Ten title in the past six years.
Passion Review
Chris Weinkopf has a good review of The Passion (which I have not seen). A portion:
‘‘The Passion of the Christ'' portrays Romans and Jews of both good will and ill. It conveys no sense of corporate responsibility for Christ's death, other than the guilt that all humanity shares because of our sinfulness.
Perhaps that's why some of the groups that most loudly suggested that Gibson and ‘‘The Passion'' were anti-Semitic have gradually downgraded those charges. Now they claim that though the film itself is not anti-Semitic, its fans might be. Bigots will misinterpret ‘‘The Passion'' and be emboldened by it, they say.
But bigots will misinterpret anything to support their prejudices, that's what makes them bigots. If all entertainment and art must be sterilized so as to prevent extremists from misinterpreting it, then neither art nor entertainment can ever seriously touch on religion again.
He continues:
And its violence, while intense, is never gratuitous. Unlike any number of bloody films that have made millions in recent years, the depiction of pain and brutality in ‘‘The Passion'' isn't meant to appeal to our morbid fascinations, but to horrify us with the ugliness and the brutality of the sins we commit every day.
That, I suspect, is the real reason why ‘‘The Passion of the Christ'' has aroused such consternation. In an age where deriding faith passes for intellectual sophistication, where truth is considered relative and the very notion of sin is dismissed, the film offers an honest, unapologetic portrayal of Christianity. It explicitly documents the evilness of men in this, a culture that often denies the existence of evil.
And that, for militant secularists, amounts to just plain poor taste.

Porn Queen Comes to Campus
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro recently hosted a porn star on campus, but billed her as an expert in "sexual health." Mike Adams, a professor there wrote an article about it. The campus then accused him of playing fast and loose with the facts, and he responded. Here is his response, which notes some interesting items he found on the campus web server.

Forced Abortions
This commentary on forced abortion, and the latest court case involving abortion presents a shocking story. (Note, the AP story can be accessed here). I have not read the Court's opinion, so I cannot comment on what legal grounds the Court possibly could have ruled that what the doctor did in this case was okay, but I cannot conceive of any persuasive grounds. Truly amazing.

Humpty Dumpty Falls (for same-sex marriage)
That was the original title for my op-ed piece for The Greenville News. Unfortunately, they changed it to the lamest title ever.
Despite that, I think you will find the article thoroughly entertaining and informative. Enjoy!
What's not being said about the Catholic abuse scandal
The major media have failed to report a significant finding contained in the recently released report from the committee desginated to investigate the matter. This media oversight has be the subject of a couple of articles at Meridian Magazine. (See here and here). I remember reading several articles around the time this scandal first broke about the link between the abuse and the influx in the past 30-40 years of homosexuals into the Catholic priesthood. (See, e.g., here). It amazes me that so many in society, in an effort not to be considered a "homophobe" or "bigot", turn a blind eye to the overwhelming evidence that homosexuality is not just another "alternative lifestyle" but instead presents some real problems for society. Obviously, some dispute that there is anything inherently different between heterosexuals and homosexuals. Burying unpleasant facts, however, brings us no closer to the "truth" which so many claim they seek after. No matter how unpleasant, and no matter what the consequences to the bearers of such "bad news", this sort of information must be part of the public discussion, especially as society grapples with whether to redefine marriage or grant marriage benefits to same-sex couples.

Why would the Girl Scouts be associated with Planned Parenthood in the first place?
Fox News has an interesting item about some boycotts of Girl Scouts down in Texas. The boycotts are due to the Girl Scouts' endorsement of a Planned Parenthood sex-ed program in which girls and boys are given literature on homosexuality, masturbation and condoms.
"It's not that we're a bunch of activists. We're just a bunch of moms who care about their kids," said Lisa Aguilar, who took her 10-year-old daughter out of her eight-member Girl Scout troop. "For us, it's the morality. Where is Girl Scouts going?"
She's obviously a religious zealot -- morality. Can you imagine, actually believing in a thing such as morality? I mean, come on, does anyone believe in right and wrong anymore? That's so outdated.
This is a Pulitzer waiting to happen....
This story is incredible. The only thing more incredible is the manner in which the mainstream press is ignoring it. If the memos showed Republican corruption, you can bet that we would have had resignations by now, and not by staffers. Some senators would have gone down.
I think this story may have legs, though. I can envision this getting sticky for the Dems at some point.

This is nuts....
Another day, another Ruling From On High.
How about this new religious cult in our country? You know, the one that the vast majority of Americans belong to -- the one where we all bow down each day to the edicts of idiots is black robes.
The way we all worship the courts, you'd think we were all part of a religion.
